Notes on phrases used:
- Expression "Akemashite Omedetou" (あけましておめでとう): The Japanese way of saying "Happy New Year". A more literal translation would be "congratulations on the opening (of a new year)".
- Expression "Ichinen no kari wa gantan ari" (一年の計は元旦にあり): All your plans for the new year should be from the very first day and you should do everything properly. Source.
- Hatsumoude (初詣): The first shrine visit of the New Year’s. During the first three days of the years it’s quite common for people in Japan to visit a big (or local) shrine. This trip is called “Hatsumoude”.
