1月1日 「元旦」
January first,
New Year's Day (“Gantan1”)

Jack
    “Happy New Year! Akemashite Omedetou!”

Ace
“Ugh. The new year just arrived and right off the bat you’re being obnoxious.”

Jack
“Don’t be like that! New year’s day is the key of the year!”

King
“Hey~ You two! It’s about time for the shrine visit.”

Jack
    “Oh! Kimono!”

King
“Well, that’s only natural on the first day of the year, right. Oh, if you have a kimono you should wear it. Compared to her daily outfit is a woman in kimono five times cut--- Argh.”

Ace
“Who are you talking to? Come on, let’s go.”

King
“Ah, just wait a bit! Ah, yes, you too.”

Ace
    “What is it this time?”

King
“Okay, here we go. One, two, three---”

All
“Please treat us kindly this year as well!”

Notes on phrases used:
  • Expression "Akemashite Omedetou" (あけましておめでとう): The Japanese way of saying "Happy New Year". A more literal translation would be "congratulations on the opening (of a new year)".
  • Expression "Ichinen no kari wa gantan ari" (一年の計は元旦にあり): All your plans for the new year should be from the very first day and you should do everything properly. Source.
  • Hatsumoude (初詣): The first shrine visit of the New Year’s. During the first three days of the years it’s quite common for people in Japan to visit a big (or local) shrine. This trip is called “Hatsumoude”.
